Our Story
Rooted in Community. Built by Community.
When Somaliland families began building new lives in Ottawa, they brought with them a powerful tradition: we look after one another. Somaliland Canadian Organization grew from that tradition — created by community members who saw a need and chose to answer it. Today, we are building a community where youth can discover their potential, families can find support, and elders can remain connected, valued, and respected. Because no one should have to build a new life alone.
Our Story
Bridging Generations & Strengthening Roots
When Somaliland families began building new lives in Ottawa, they brought with them more than their hopes for the future. They brought a deep tradition of community, mutual care, and looking out for one another — the belief that no one should have to face hardship alone. Somaliland Canadian Organization was born from this tradition. Founded by community members who had experienced the journey of resettlement firsthand, we set out to create a place where youth could find mentors, elders could find companionship, and every family could feel seen, valued, and supported. Rooted in our culture and inspired by the strength of generations before us, our work brings people together across generations. We create opportunities for young people to discover their potential, develop their leadership, and build a strong sense of identity and belonging, while ensuring our elders remain connected, respected, and valued within the community.
"No one should face hardship alone."
The founding principle of Somaliland Canadian Organization
Today, we serve hundreds of families across Ottawa, offering programs and opportunities that honour Somaliland-Canadian identity while opening doors to learning, mentorship, connection, and opportunity. Our work is about more than providing programs. It is about strengthening the relationships, traditions, and sense of belonging that hold our community together.
We are bridging generations, strengthening roots, and building a future where every member of our community has a place to belong.
